Our Vacation

We decided to go on a last minute vacation. We just got 3 inches of snow after a week of temps getting in the 60’s! My mom and I had enough of snow. We were talking how it would be nice to go down south for the weekend, get to warmer weather. My husband and I thought it would be nice to get away for a few days before the growing season starts. Once mid April comes, we can’t leave till the end of the season. He is so busy with planting and cleaning up the orchard that there isn’t much time. We decided on a Wednesday that we wanted to leave Thursday morning. I was so thankful that my brother-in-law was willing to take care of my crazy amount of animals, he did an amazing job! We packed the kids up and set out on our adventure.

We planned on going to the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky. They keep it affordable for families, even large families. We went there last year, and really enjoyed our time. It is very relaxing and not fast paced, you can take your time and enjoy everything. The staff is very nice and helpful. It is also extremely nice not be judged for being a larger family, honestly we were the average size there. And a family that homeschool their children. I can’t wait to go when they have the life sized Noah’s Ark! That will be amazing. This year it was a little chilly, but when we were there last time, we went on the walking path. The kids really enjoyed the bridges and the petting zoo at the top. I honestly loved the petting zoo. They had a zobroid (a zebra and a horse. There are a lot of names for them) I had always wanted to see one, they made a dream of mine come true! All the other animals were maintained very well. It was nice and clean, and the animals looked like they were being fed and cared for properly. They also have an IMAX theater, we didn’t have time for it. But it was great last year. A few of our kids get motion sickness with big screens, but they still loved it. The cafeteria is very nice, they have great seating and the food is very good, and affordable. I love how they have everything set up for large families. Even the restrooms are big, clean and wonderful. This is a place that I enjoy bringing my family to, and I know they enjoy it as well.
IMG_1285From there we drove down to Chattanooga, TN. It was a long drive, but the kids did extremely well. We went to the aquarium there. I have been going to the aquarium since I was little. I have great childhood memories there with my older sisters, and I wanted my kids to have great family memories. We went there last year, so we got a membership. That is the cheapest way for our family to do anything. The membership was going to expire in a few days, I am so happy we decided to go and use it one more time. The aquarium has two buildings. You start at the top and work your way down. Each floor has a theme, then you walk down a ramp through a huge fish tank. It is amazing, my 3 year old went crazy!

The second building has a butterfly garden, and a tank where you can pet stingrays and a small breed of shark. My kids were extremely scared last year to try it, but this year they did it! I still won’t touch them, but my Lady Bug was very brave and touched one, she said it felt like gum. We went into the butterfly garden, my Bugman was in heaven! He was so excited that he could look at a butterfly, and have them land on him. I had to take a lot of pictures of his favorite ones.

IMG_1330When we walked out of the butterfly garden there was a lady holding a little snake, Bugman walked right over to her and waited till she said he could pet it. With out skipping a beat he starts to pet the snake, my
stomach turned. He then turned to me and asked if we could get a pet snake. I looked at him and said “There is no way I will let a snake in the house.” We finished our time in Chattanooga walking around the craft fair that was set up there that day. They had a few interesting items to look at.

Even more last minute, we drove up to Nashville. My mom found a Dave and Busters at the mall in Nashville. My parents treated the kids to a game night. We normally try to avoid big places with a lot of people when it is just the two of us with all six kids. But we figured with reinforcement and it being earlier in the day we could keep track of the kids. Bumblebee found a fish game that he loved, and he kept winning a large amount of tickets. The older kids went crazy trying every game. We ended up winning 12,000 tickets. The kids had a blast and they got nice things with the tickets that we divided up. We had a lot of fun, and are looking forward to going back. We drove to Louisville, Kentucky that night and stayed at a wonderful hotel called Homewood Suites. We got a room that had two bedrooms, a king bed in one room, two queen beds in the other, and a small but nice kitchen and living area. It was very clean, unlike most hotels I’ve stayed at that make my skin crawl. I put our on-guard essential oil blend on my kids and I felt very comfortable letting my Cupcake run around. They had a great breakfast, and the rates were amazing! It is very hard to find a hotel that doesn’t cost us an arm and a leg to stay a night, or one that has two rooms. We are very happy to say we will always search for a Homewood Suites when we travel.
